Anthony Burgess adapted his iconic novel for the stage as an antidote to the universally recognised movie by Stanley Kubrick.
Music-lover, teenage monster and amoral punk, Alex de Large has his own way of having a good time. Set in a futuristic England where conformity rules and dark nights have drawn in, Alex and his young "droogs" rule the streets committing horrifying crimes.
Puns, strange words, fast rhythms and jargon will thrill the audience to form a brutal, genius slang which brilliantly locates Alex where he belongs. Controversial, tantalizing and comic in turn, this compelling tale of dehumanization and social redemption still has the power to entice, shock and hold us in its grasp today.
Anthony Burgess hated the treatment given to his book by Stanley Kubrick’s film. He subsequently adapted the novel for the stage as an antidote to the film also to stop unauthorized adaptations being made that mirror the Stanley Kubrick treatment.
This performance is not recommended for viewers under 14 years of age.
