Lars von Trier's Cannes Grand Prix award winning Breaking the Waves is a period piece set in the highlands of Scotland in the 1970s. The love of Bess for her husband Jan, and her love of god are both put to the test when Jan is forced to return from his work on an oil rig and asks her to sleep with other men.
