Er Housheng, a travelling singer/musician working in er ren tai, a form known for its bawdy and satirical content. On one level, Er’s experience shows us how traditional cultures survive and adapt in a changing society; on another, it offers the very personal story of a man adapting to loss of sight and to uncertain times.

In Chinese with English subtitles

Xu Tonggrew up during the Cultural Revolution, studied news photography in the 1980s, and has produced a string of important and award-winning documentaries in the past decade. Xu’s work challenges us to ask what the China that we mostly see in cities of glass and steel looks like through the eyes of the people who live on the fringes of society, outside the “Chinese Dream” of prosperity and modernity.
