Sheffield-based writer, Desiree Reynolds talks about Seduce, her ambitious debut novel full of twists and surprises and a host of distinctly unforgettable characters. Told in a compelling literary patois which is poetic, delicate, pungent and slyly funny, Desiree Reynolds brings to life an extraordinary world and she has powerful things to say about religion, race, class and the struggle between men and women.

Set on the mythical Church Island, a two bit rock in the Caribbean, Seduce is dead but not departed. At her wake, Seduce’s family, neighbours and the townspeople bear witness and give testimony of this ‘dutty, filthy woman’. Stories abound of love and loss, of old grievances and scores settled, illuminated by a series of flashbacks exposing hypocrisy and contradiction and Seduce’s own commentary on the proceeding.

Desiree Reynolds started her writing career in London as a freelance journalist for the Jamaica Gleaner and the Village Voice. She has since written film scripts, poetry and short stories. Some of her shorts are published on SABLE E-Mag and various anthologies.

A teacher, broadcaster and DJ, Desiree lives in Sheffield, and is working on a collection of short stories.
