Dheepan 15
A former Tamil commander leaves war-torn Sri Lanka for a better life as the caretaker of a French housing estate. What he finds there is a battleground of a different kind, as he fights to keep his makeshift family together and find their place in a fractured, foreign world. Dheepan is a stunning, quietly moving film that won the Palme D’Or at the 2015 Cannes film festival, from Jacques Audiard, the director of Rust and Bone and A Prophet.
The 6pm screening on April 11 will be introduced by Dr Julia Dobson, Reader in French Film and Performance at the University of Sheffield.
My research engages primarily with shifting dynamics of relationships between self and other and with the (re)mappings of cultural constructions of subjectivity and alterity. Within such negotiations of identity, my research explores the representation of agency, voice and the body across two fields: contemporary theatre and contemporary film.
