Understanding Film Language

This session looks into film techniques used to tell stories, and how they are applied in all aspects of media.

With the use of short films, we will look at a number of techniques used to convey the story characters and emotions.

This session can then be followed by a feature film screening with an introduction that highlights particular points to consider.

As an alternative the group will separate to develop a short film idea, with particular attention to how they will convey particular plot points with film techniques.

Showroom Tour

We will take you round the largest independent cinema outside of London, we will walk round the Workstation, where many of Sheffield’s digital companies are housed, and finally the projection room where we witness the magic happen!

[The projection tour is limited to 10 at a time, and can take up to 15min]

Reading Subtitles

Using a short foreign language film, or a film clip, the group will watch the film with and without subtitles. This will firstly help the group understand the story from visuals, sound, acting and editing point of view. Once they are comfortable with that they will be encouraged to read the subtitles for a rounded film experience.

The aim of this session can either be for the group to better understand a particular foreign language; get to grips with reading whilst following a story; or just to better understand film language.

-How the Showroom Workstation and Café work as a business.

-How the films industry works and the journey a film takes from an idea to the cinema.

Additional subjects can be covered that fit into the industry, and how we play a role in the wider context. We are happy to discuss any requirements you may have.
