Loving 12A
When Richard Loving and his pregnant girlfriend Mildred married in Washington in 1958, they could never have imagined the impact of their love on US history. They had simple ambitions: to live, love and raise a family, but on returning to their home in Virginia – a state where interracial marriage was illegal – the couple were threatened with prison under segregation laws, unless they agreed to leave Virginia for 25 years.
Adam Stone’s cinematography is breath-taking in its minimalism, letting the story unfold naturally through the exquisitely tender performances of Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga.Nichol’s film is a gentle but radical telling of the true story of two ordinary people whose love was set to change a nation.
