In the world of Carnivals, the ‘Mentalist’ was always a two person job - using an intricate code to communicate predictions and dupe an audience desperate to speak to their lost loved ones or learn what fate has in store for them. In this brilliantly Noir film, Stan Carlisle (Tyrone Power) joins the carnival and becomes embroiled in love affairs, booze, money and dark forces. The poster asks us “What is this exciting power over women?” a question that only he can answer surely.
