No 15
Cynical young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra, is asked to spearhead the “No” campaign for those opposing the Pinochet regime. With scant resources and constant scrutiny from Pinochet’s regime and the secret police, this bold, enthralling film looks at how the masses managed to overthrow one of the most controversial military figures in Latin American history using modern advertising tactics.
No was shot on low-grade video equipment to reflect the media technology of the time and cuts between scripted scenes and archive footage of the time including adverts from the era and the protests in the run-up to the referendum. This results in a compelling period piece which has made No one of the most talked about films on the independent film circuit this year.
Pablo Larrain’s No stars acclaimed actor Gael Garcia Bernal. Winner of the coveted Art Cinema Prize during Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival 2012.
