This beautifully illustrated talk explores the history of the Blackpool Tower from its opening in 1894 to the present day. Inspired by the Eiffel Tower, this extraordinary Grade I Listed landmark rises to 158 metres. Known as ‘The Wonderland of the World’ the Tower houses the world famous Ballroom, designed by Frank Matcham, and the Circus. In its 121 year history Blackpool Tower has been host to many stars of stage and screen including Peter Kay, Cleo Laine and Duke Ellington and Strictly Come Dancing. The first Wurlitzer organ was installed in 1929 and played by resident organist Reginald Dixon who was known affectionately worldwide as "Mr. Blackpool".

Professor Vanessa Toulmin is Director of City and Cultural Engagement at the University of Sheffield and Chair in Early Film & Popular Entertainment. She was Director of the Showzam Festival in Blackpool for 5 years and Specialist Advisor on Heritage. She is the author of 4 books on Blackpool covering the Tower, Pleasure Beach, Illuminations and Winter Gardens.
