A fascinating vision of London life in the 18th and 19th centuries told through stories from the notorious debtors’ prison Marshalsea –immortalised by Charles Dickens as a byword for misery. Imprisoned here as a child, Dickens was scarred by the experience for life –observing wealthy inmates maintaining servants while the poorest faced starvation. Jerry White unearths extraordinary tales from an array of colourful but unfortunate characters enduring a stay in Marshalsea’s cells.
