Outside The Law 15
Hors-la-loi
After losing their home in Algeria, three brothers and their mother are parted. Messaoud joins the French army fi ghting in Indochina; Abdelkader becomes a leader of the Algerian independence movement in France and Saïd moves to Paris to make his fortune in clubs and boxing halls. Gradually, they are reunited in Paris, where they have to fight for freedom.
Controversial and partisan throughout, the film’s portrayal of French atrocities against Algerians, particularly the 1945 Sétif massacre, resulted in protests at the Cannes Film Festival for its “anti-French” stance.
Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award 2011.
"The performances are terrific (topped by Bouajila as Abdelkader) and the dialogue manages to encapsulate various debates without feeling preachy or false. It’s an impressive achievement as an engaged entertainment and a powerful rallying cry for a nation to think more deeply about its colonial past and the ancestry of many of its citizens."
