Violeta Went to Heaven
Violeta Se Fue A Los Cielos
Winner of the World Cinema Jury Prize at Sundance in 2012.
Violeta Went to Heaven recounts the complex and colourful life of influential Chilean singer-songwriter and artist, Violeta Parra. The major force behind the cultural revolution that swept across Chile in the late 60’s, Parra nurtured a passion for preserving folk culture that reflected her roots growing up in poverty in rural Chile and which led to her status as mother of the New Chilean Song Movement.
Director Andrés Wood draws an evocative performance from Francisca Gavilán as Parra in a visually rich portrayal of this national cultural icon. Needless to say, the soundtrack is a rare gem.
This screening is part of the 'Chile: 40 Years On' Film Bites season.
