Wendy & Lucy 15
After her car breaks down on the way to find a job at the lucrative fishing canneries in Alaska, Wendy (Michelle Williams) is left stranded with her only companion: her dog, Lucy. Trapped and penniless in the Pacific Northwest, Wendy’s resources quickly dwindle and she finds herself collecting cans and bottles and shoplifting dog food until she is apprehended by the police and Lucy disappears. In her first collaboration with Williams, Reichardt explores the struggles of one young woman on the verge of destitution; this is a portrait of small-town America as a desolate prison. Shot over eighteen days with 16mm film stock in North Portland, Oregon, this is Reichardt at her minimalist best.
