Summer School Applicant FAQ’s
What does the course cover?
The course focuses on developing your company. This CAN be by developing individual projects but you are more likely to benefit if you are seeking to increase the turnover and stability of your activity/company.
How much does the course cost?
The full cost of the course is £450 + vat which includes lunch everyday.
Is there any assistance available if I can’t afford the cost of the course?
Bursaries are available to cover up to 80% of course costs depending on your circumstances. Please see the guidance and application form on our website
What facilities are available for people with disabilities who wish to attend the course?
The course venue is fully accessible, please see details on our website

Where will the Summer School take place?
The Summer School will take place at Showroom Workstation which is a Creative Business Centre and 4 screen independent cinema in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
What are the minimum qualifications required for applicants?
We do not require any minimum qualifications as such however you must have an excellent standard of verbal and written English and have a good basic education. You must also show that you have been working in the industry.
I’m a recent graduate can I apply for the Summer School?
The course is designed for professionals already working in the industry. If you have undertaken paid work on professional film productions in the past you will be eligible to apply. If you have undertaken work on professional productions for which your payment has been deferred or in a voluntary capacity or you have worked only on student productions you will not be eligible. If you are still not sure whether you are eligible to apply please contact us.
I’ve worked on several film projects since leaving college but I haven’t been paid – am I eligible to apply?
Can I apply if I am a Director/writer/producer/camera operator etc?
Yes, you can apply if you work professionally in the film and media industry – what is important is the business idea you wish to start-up or develop. Your business idea does not have to be production based, it could be a business that lies within the film and media industry but isn’t directly aiming to produce a film or other piece of media content.
I don’t currently work in the Film industry can I still apply?
If your business idea involves activity within the film and media industry then you should apply. You will be required to demonstrate that you have experience of working in a professional capacity in the film and media industry.
How do I apply for a place in the incubator?
You can apply for a place during the Summer School week. Applications are made in the form of a pitch and you will receive training on how to pitch to our decision making panel. The panel will of course take into account the viability of your business plan.
I live in London can I apply for the school?
Yes you can apply. Please read the guidance on the aims of the course and note that the course will be held in Sheffield.
I am not a UK resident can I attend the Summer School?
Yes you can attend the summer school if you intend to set up or develop a business which will have a clear benefit to the UK film and media industry. Creative Skillset will help determine if you are eligible.
I only want to attend one of the advertised sessions, not the whole course, can I do that?
Some masterclasses and screenings may be made available to the public to buy individual tickets to attend. Other than that, individual sessions are not available to attend unless you are a full participant on the course. Participants are required to attend ALL sessions. You will not be eligible to apply for the Incubator unless you are a full participant and attend ALL sessions.
what is included in the incubator?
We are looking for participants who intend to develop and build their business. The incubator provides some free and some heavily subsidised rents and offers a package of benefits designed to aid development of your business through to full independence and sustainability.
Can I chose my mentors after the course?
The course leader will assign the most appropriate mentors from our mentor bank to you.
