Les quatre cents coups
Truffaut's first film as director is one of his greatest. Working with Jean Pierre Leaud (his cinematic alter-ego) for the first time, Truffaut tells the story of Antoine, a young boy in Paris who keeps finding himself on the wrong side of his (somewhat ineffectual) parents and his schoolmasters, until he is put in the hands of a youth detention centre. The final, iconic scene alone merits the film's deserved reputation, in Truffaut's touching picture of frustrated and misunderstood youth.
