BFI Film Academy 2018/19

BFI film academy 2018/19 - applications now open!

We are searching South Yorkshire for 20 talented, enthusiastic and hard-working 16-19 year olds, to take part in this year's BFI Film Academy at Showroom Cinema, Sheffield. We are particularly welcoming applications from those groups currently under-represented in the industry.

The course runs from Wednesday 7th November until Saturday 26th January.

By taking part in the Film Academy, participants will:

- Be immersed in all aspects of hands-on filmmaking which will help them to develop their practical knowledge and skills working alongside industry professionals who are respected practitioners in their field. Please see below for a full list of our industry speakers.

- Gain a real insight into the exciting world of cinema, equipping them with skills and experience that are essential to becoming part of our future film industry.

- Watch a range of cinema from British independent to specialised film and you will work in teams towards a practical film-based project spread across a ten week course.

- All participants will be working towards a recognised qualification from Arts Award.

- Participants will become part of the BFI Film Academy Alumni and will be offered exclusive opportunities.

The BFI Film Academy is open to young people, from any background.

In order to apply, you must:

  • Be aged 16-19 years old on the first day of the course
  • Not be attending university at the time of the course
  • Have a passion or talent for film and an ambition to work in the film industry
  • Be able to commit to all of the below dates

Course Fee

We welcome applications from talented young film enthusiasts from all backgrounds. The Course Fee is £25.00. Please don’t let the cost of the course deter you from applying, our generous bursary scheme can cover the course fee and costs such as travel or childcare - if you have the talent and enthusiasm we will make sure you can attend. Paul Fraser – Script Masterclass

Paul Fraser

Prolific scriptwriter Paul Fraser will be delivering a script masterclass to all participants. Well known for his collaboration with Director Shane Meadows - his films include A Room For Romeo Brass, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands and Somers Town.


Rachel Tunnard – Directing Masterclass

Rachel Tunnard

Rachel Tunnard is one of the most distinctive and important northern voices in British independent cinema and will be leading a directing masterclass as part of the BFI Film Academy. Her award-winning films include BIFA winning Adult Life Skills, Skeletons and Little Ashes.


Caroline Cooper-Charles – Producing Masterclass

Caroline Cooper Charles 2

Caroline Cooper Charles former Head of Film at Creative England and current Strategic Development Executive at Screen Yorkshire will be in attendance to deliver a producer masterclass. As well as working in industry development she has produced and executive produced numerous feature and short films.


Rebecca Mark-Lawson – Script Editing and Development Masterclass

Rebecca Mark Lawson

Rebecca Mark-Lawson has worked across the industry for the last eighteen years, she started her career in Production Management, working on films such as Dead Man’s Shoes and The Navigators. She has since established herself as a film producer with forty five films to her name, she has recently produced In Another Life and the upcoming documentary Irene’s Ghost which will be premiering at BFI London Film Festival 2018.


Sally Cancello – Acting Masterclass

Sally Cancello

Sally Cancello is well known for her work in theatre and film. She is the founder of Sheffield based Triple Salco Productions where she has further developed her career adding writing, producing, theatre and film to her already numerous skills. She has stared in a number of short films including Time Again, Gaybies and Strange Digs.
