Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American artist who first achieved fame in the 70s through street art in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. By the 80s his paintings covered the walls of galleries across the world and in ’92 the Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his work. This is the story of his life and the movements that inspired him and a portrait of downtown New York City1978-81 - pre AIDS, Reagan, the real estate and art booms –  before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. Then came the 80s and everything changed.
