Cannes Day 8

Posted 22 May 2014

I always make an effort to catch British films when I'm here, it's great to see the UK represented at such an important festival, and not just in the form of the grandfathers of British cinema Loach and Leigh. So I headed to 'Snow in Paradise' a British title in Certain Regard section. I find it rather frustrating that British filmmakers are still working within the traditional East End gangster genre. Not quite run of the mill but far from the daring work I was hoping for. I can't understand the never ending interest in this genre, it seems so dated and simplistic to me now.

'Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter' was a much discussed film at the Berlinale so I was very pleased to finally get to see it here in the market. A truly unique tale of treasure, loneliness, adventure and Fargo. Hopefully this one will make it to UK shores!
