Certain Women reunites Kelly Reichardt (River of Grass, Old Joy and most recently, Night Moves – check out our new Film Studies course if you’re a fan) with Michelle Williams for a striking, interwoven portrait of independent women at odds with their rural surroundings in small-town Montana. Add Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart and Lily Gladstone to the mix and this is a sublime pastoral symphony of frustrated ambitions and lonely ranchers. Honest and yearning, humble and heart-breaking, the story is charged by the soaring landscape. Broad skylines sweep to greet bottled up thoughts and space and place make the minute epic. Think Manchester By the Sea on the Yellowstone river, in the bosom of the Absaroka mountains.
