CODA + Introduction + Q&A 12A
As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music and her fear of abandoning her parents.
This warm, sensitive film won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award when it screened at the Sundance Film Festival. A thoughtful, crowd-pleasing, coming-of-age comedy drama with heaps of heart.
This screening will include a special pre-recorded poetry performance by Irina Drytchack, Sign For All. After the screening, there will be a pre-recorded Q&A with CODA director Siân Heder, and the four cast members of the fictional Rossi family, Marlee Matlin, Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur and Daniel Durant. The Q&A is presented by Apple Original Films and BFI in collaboration with RNID, and the film is showing in partnership with Sign For All. Supported by BFI Film Feels: Hopeful. The poetry performance and Q&A both include BSL translation. Released with open captions, all screenings of CODA will have English subtitles for English dialogue and non-dialogue sounds such as music, a car door slamming, the phone ringing, etc.
