Tug of War is a Tanzanian historical drama directed by Amil Shivji, based on the Swahili novel VutaN'Kuvute by Adam Shafi. The film is set in the 1950s during the struggle for Zanzibar's independence from British colonial rule. It follows Denge, a young revolutionary distributing anti-colonial pamphlets, and Yasmin, a runaway bride from a privileged Indian-Zanzibari family. As they navigate love and rebellion, Yasmin becomes more involved in the independence movement. The film explores themes of resistance, love, and social justice against the backdrop of colonial Zanzibar.

Tug of War has been well-received, praised for its stunning cinematography, social commentary, and for shedding light on a little-known historical period. It was lauded for its authenticity and attention to detail, capturing the vibrancy of Zanzibar during the independence movement.

Tug of War has gathered international awards and recognition at prestigious festival such as; Carthage Film Festival (JCC), Zanzibar International Film Festival, Africa Movie Academy Awards and many more.
