The year is 1991. After the extinction of domestic cats and dogs in the early 1980s, trained apes took their place as man’s best friends. Now they are kept as slaves, expected to carry out any number of menial tasks in an American police state. Meanwhile, Caesar (Roddy McDowall), a highly evolved chimpanzee, must hide his deep intelligence and, importantly, his ability to speak. The third sequel to 1968’s seminal Planet of the Apes, Conquest is a carefully constructed rumination on the battle for civil rights and illustrates just how the human race brought about the original film’s post-apocalyptic future.
