In 1950s Baltimore, juvenile delinquent Wade “Cry Baby” Walker (Johnny Depp) falls in love with Allison Vernon (Amy Locane), a square who desperately wants to be bad. Spoofing Grease and the juvenile delinquency scare films of the 1950s, Cry Baby features an impressive ensemble cast including Ricki Lake, Iggy Pop and Traci Lords alongside John Waters favourites Patricia Hearst and Mink Stole. One of Waters’ most enduringly popular – and surprisingly inoffensive - films, Cry Baby takes aim at several social ideologies: the beauty myth, the nuclear family, class structure and the cult of celebrity.
