Dr Alex Harris (Fritz Weaver), a gifted computer
scientist, has created an advanced artificial intelligence he calls Proteus IV
– a brilliant synthetic mind that he hopes will aid medical research and cure
human afflictions. But Harris did not predict that his creation would develop
an intellect far beyond human capabilities, or that it would begin to question
its programmer. Proteus soon becomes obsessed with Harris' wife, Susan (Julie
Christie), and uses her as a tool to help it take shape in the physical world.
Like 1975's The Stepford Wives before it, Demon Seed uses the
robot trope to question patriarchy.
