Der Golem was director Paul Wegener’s third, and final, version of the ancient Jewish myth, and his magnum opus - capped by Karl Freund's exhilarating lighting and cinematography. When a Jewish community is threatened with removal from a city, the Rabbi constructs a figure of clay to stop the oppression. Calling upon ancient, mystical powers, the creature is brought to life to protect the people. With its foreshadowing of the Jewish persecution to come, Der Golem is a poignant piece of film-making and one of the great masterpieces of silent cinema.
