"Filled with the violence and Orwellian unreality ruling eastern Ukraine, Sergei Loznitsa’s feverish procession of scenes is handled with steely control ... a vivid achievement"
★★★★ The Guardian
This dark comedy from celebrated Ukranian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa (A Gentle Creature) won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard) in 2018.
In eastern Ukraine, society begins to degrade as the effects of propaganda and manipulation begin to surface in this post-truth era. Here, war is called peace, and hate claims to be love. This is not just a tale about a region, a country or a political system but about a world lost in the after-truth and false identities.
With actors and locals, Loznitsa recreates videos from YouTube and other social media, confirming again that truth is often stranger than fiction. His episodic fictionalisation, replete with pitch-black humour, shows how easily absurd comedy slips into absurd tragedy.
