Faya Dayi 12A
Jessica Beshir, director, writer, cinematographer and producer has created a deeply personal and immersive exploration in Faya Dayi, a documentary that doubles as a spiritual experience. Beshir left her hometown in the highlands of Harar, Ethiopia as a teen due to political unrest but she returns to form a portrait of the land, its people and their connection to the Khat plant. Capturing intimate moments from the harvesters of the Khat crop and the people lost in its narcotic haze, to the younger generation who are torn between a connection to place and a longing for more. Filmed in captivating black and white, the documentary is woven with fables of the Sumi Imams who discovered Khat in search of the water of eternal light.
