Tutor: Professor Anandi Ramamurthy.

Gaza is a place with a rich history and a myriad of connections and migrations. Two thirds of its population are refugees from historic Palestine. Even during the days of the PLO Film Unit, connecting to Gaza was difficult due to the military occupation, making its image constantly subject to translation. This lecture will explore the image of Gaza and the power of Palestinian narratives reflecting on the work of Mustafa Abu Ali, Abdel Salam Shehada, Rasheed Mashrawi, Youssef Nateel and Yasser Murtaja. We will explore extracts from Rashid Masharawi’s powerful anthology ‘From Ground Zero’ 2024, Palestine’s submission to the Oscars in 2025.

Presented in association with Sheffield Hallam University.

Due to popular demand, lectures in the Film Studies: Exploring Palestinian Cinema series will take place in the Creative Lounge, which can be entered via the Work Station entrance on Paternoster Row.
