November's Film of the Month: Winter Sleep

Posted 30 October 2014 about Winter Sleep.

We are proud to show the winner of the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes film festival as our film of the month.

Winter Sleep is the latest film from Nuri Bilge Celan, the great Turkish film-maker.  Here at the Showroom we have exhibited all his films to date and Sheffield audiences have responded with increasing enthusiasm.  Celan's previous film Once Upon A Time In Anatolia was a great success, consolidating his reputation as one of the most interesting film-makers in world cinema and attracting large numbers of Sheffield people.

Winter Sleep is about an ageing actor and would be academic running a small hotel in central Anatolia, Turkey, with his young wife and his sister.  In winter as the snow begins to fall, the hotel turns into a shelter from the outside world.   Their relationship with the local population, rich and poor, powerful and powerless is explored in this rich and powerful film.
