Harmonium 15
Toshio lives a modest but comfortable life with his wife, Akie and daughter, Hotaru, above their family-run factory. A mysterious man, Yasaka, arrives at the house needing somewhere to live: a figure from Toshio’s past who has just been released from a long stretch in prison. Toshio provides Yasaka with a room and work, and the lodger soon develops a relationship with the family: one that gradually begins to unsettle and ultimately devastates.
Kôji Fukada is a master of pace, here creating a slow-burning but dramatic tale of retribution and penance that is sure to work its way under the skin. Harmonium is a beautifully-crafted film that is chilling in its intensity, delving into the shades of human experience lurking beneath the seemingly peaceful surface...
