Inversion PG
Niloofar is a young, unmarried woman living in Tehran. She owns a small tailoring and alterations business employing several workers that she has nurtured for almost a decade and enjoys pursing romantic interests. However, it soon becomes clear that Niloofar has had little control over the choices in her life. Her mother, with whom she shares an apartment and suffers from a chronic pulmonary disease, is hospitalised and the family are warned by the doctors that if she remains living amongst the smog-riddled streets of Tehran she will die. While Niloofar believes that the whole family should share the responsibility of looking after their mother, it is she who is expected to move away from the city: as an unmarried woman, her desires seemingly hold no weight with her brothers and other family members. Inversion is a quietly powerful film about the ongoing fight for women’s liberation.
