Cannes 2016 - Day 4
The moment I had been waiting for had finally arrived - a
new Andrea Arnold film. Having queued for hours in the blazing sun without
water or food, I was a little sunburnt and rather frustrated - not the best mood to watch a film in.
However, as soon as the cast started to dance/rap and basically rock the red
carpet, I was happy.
AMERICAN HONEY, returns to similar themes as my most
favourite FISH TANK, however, this time they are further explored and
transposed to America.
America, massive sprawling and full of character is shown
both in the areas visited and through the occupants on this crazy road trip.
Teenagers in a van cross the states selling magazines; Star, the newest recruit
is head over heels for leader of the group, Jake and she is willing to follow
him to wherever he wants. At its core this is a film without major trauma, more
a study of a life beginning as Star finds her way. Without the unnecessary
exposition, we know exactly all we need to about any of the characters and each
is interesting and challenging in their own way. I can't wait to see what lead
actor Sasha Lane works on next - but she shines in this!
Overall AMERICAN HONEY is exactly what I wanted it to be
and more, an honest and potentially brutal coming-of-age story, told in a
glorious, warm, colourful and wonderful way.
