Kings of the Road 18
A bungled suicide attempt brings projector repairman Bruno (Rüdiger Vogler) and paediatrician Robert (Hanns Zischler) together. From bizarre beginnings, the two form a genuine friendship as Robert accompanies Bruno along the border between East and West German. They discuss the decline of German film, the hegemony of American culture and their challenging relationships with women before ultimately parting ways.
A key European film of the 1970s, it is a ramshackle and lyrical reflection on life from prolific director Wim Wenders. With a fractured narrative and a sparse script, it builds as a steady study of ordinary people.
Robby Müller, one of the world's most eloquent cinematographers, contributes to the almost hypnotic quality to the film. It is truly Europe's answer to the American road move.
