La Strada PG
Young Gelsomina is sold by her mother to a travelling strongman, Zampanò. Her life with him is cold, alienating and he frequently abuses her. Zampanò’s foil is found in the character of the Fool, with whom Gelsomina imagines a life with but is convinced by him to remain with her belligerent partner, with devastating consequences.
A master of behaviour and cinematic language, Fellini’s characters are richly developed, powered by truly unforgettable performances of depth and nuance from Giulietta Masina, Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart. La Strada studies the intricacies of human behaviour and how we navigate the complex brutality of the world characters like Zampanò represent.
