Comedian Lucy Beaumont to Close Sheffield Film Festival
Showroom Cinema's first ever Sheffield Film Festival is closes with a bang as comedian Lucy Beaumont heads to the cinema for an exclusive one-off live event to discuss and screen some of her favourite films.
Hailing from Hull, Lucy’s career in comedy continues to grow from strength to strength and she is now one of the UK’s favourite comedic voices. As a writer she’s had success with Channel 4 sitcom Hullraisers and the documentary-style series Meet the Richardsons. Her performances have ranged from national stand-up tours with her unique brand of softly-spoken, but brutally-blunt wit, to a memorable season of Greg Davies and Alex Horne’s hit show Taskmaster, and comedy podcast Lucy & Sam's Perfect Brains.
The beloved Yorkshire comic will join us live on stage for an event titled ‘My Favourite Films With... Lucy Beaumont’ on Friday 30 August at 6pm. Ahead of a screening of her chosen films, Lucy will chat about the role cinema has played in her life in a special Q&A before settling down with the audience to the films of her choice... And what a double-bill this is!
For the event, Lucy has chosen two films that have deeply influenced her life and career; a special double-bill of Mike Leigh’s classic entries into the Play for Today series, 1976’s Nuts in May and 1977’s Abigail’s Party. Both films star the effervescent national treasure Alison Steadman in two of her most iconic roles, and the combination of Leigh’s razor-sharp, observational comedy writing alongside Steadman at her very finest makes for a perfect Friday night.
Lucy’s appearance at Showroom Cinema will be the first edition of Showroom’s special screenings strand, ‘My Favourite Films with...’, in which a different special guest joins Showroom Cinema for a discussion about their life, career, and cinema, before a screening of their chosen movies. We’re pleased to announce that legendary Sheffield artist Pete McKee will be the next guest, with a date to be announce soon, so watch this space.
Other unmissable events to round out Sheffield Film Festival include Ken Loach’s Sheffield-filmed Looks and Smiles (30 August – 1 September), QTIBPOC Cinema Club’s social food and film (30 August), and local female film club Film Girls Galore presenting a special screening of Gurinder Chadha’s noughties classic Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (31 August).
