Luzzu 15
Written and directed by Alex Camilleri, Luzzu tells the story of Jesmark, a hardworking Maltese fisherman who is faced with an agonising decision. He can repair his damaged luzzu – a traditional, multicoloured wooden fishing boat – in the hopes of making his living at sea, providing for his wife and son, just as his father and grandfather did before him. Or he can decommission his boat in exchange for an EU pay out, and join a black-market operation that is decimating the Mediterranean fish population and the livelihoods of local families.
Luzzu is a moving portrait of a world in flux, capturing the bitter change of times and loss of tradition against the arresting and vibrant Maltese landscape.
