Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts 15
The Indonesian island of Sumba provides the setting for this stunning revenge-Western. Marlina, recently widowed, finds her home and livelihood under attack from a gang who think they can take ownership of her body and cattle because she no longer has a man to ‘protect’ her… they are wrong. Killing several of her attackers, Marlina goes on a long, demanding journey in search of justice and redemption in the face of gender-based violence and discrimination.
Striking visuals and an evocative soundtrack make this an incredibly powerful watch, and the film is a brilliant example of what can happen when traditionally male-dominated genres like the Western are opened up to stories of womanhood.
