McCabe & Mrs Miller + Intro 15
Released in the same week as Pakula’s Klute, Robert Altman’s revisionist Western stars Warren Beatty and Julie Christie as the titular characters. McCabe arrives mysteriously in the Pacific Northwest mining town of Presbyterian Church and sets about running a makeshift brothel; Mrs Miller arrives soon after and, seeing an opportunity, establishes herself as McCabe’s business partner. Soon, their venture brings considerable wealth to the community, but this is noticed by representatives of a mining company from a nearby town, which threatens to be the undoing of McCabe & Mrs Miller. Described by Roger Ebert as ‘a perfect film,’ McCabe & Mrs Miller unfolds to a haunting soundtrack of Leonard Cohen and expertly de-constructs and revitalises the most American of genres.
This screening features a pre-recorded introduction by video editor and film programmer, Amos Levin.
