Mean Girls tells the story of Cady Heron's arrival in a (stereo)typical American high school having been homeschooled her whole life. It has quickly morphed into a classic but what can it tell us about the functioning of social norms and power relations? In looking at the cruel and implicit rules of popularity that slice the school's community into cliques of queen bees and freaks through newcomer Cady's eyes are we able to figure out how these norms get constructed? And perhaps more importantly, does the film provide us with tools to figure out how to dismantle them
