Mr Jones 15
In this powerful and stirring historical drama, Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, In Darkness) brings to the screen the story of the real-life Welsh journalist Gareth Jones (James Norton) who inspired George Orwell's Animal Farm after he uncovered Stalin’s genocidal famine in Ukraine, the Holodomor, which killed almost 10 million people in 1932 and 1933.
We meet Jones in 1933, working as foreign advisor to British Prime Minister Lloyd George after making his name by scooping an interview with Hitler. Looking for his next big story, Jones is determined to travel to the USSR and land an interview with Stalin, who was then much admired for boosting Soviet productivity despite the world’s economic depression.
On arriving in Moscow, Jones soon hears murmurs that there’s a dark truth hidden behind the prosperity on display in the Soviet capital. Managing to elude his minders, Jones travels clandestinely to Ukraine, where he witnesses the horrors of man-made starvation first-hand…
