BFI Musicals! Hidden Gems

This December, as part of the BFI's nationwide season celebrating the greatest show on screen, we’re bringing you three hidden gems of the musical genre.

Our mini season showcases three little known movie musical masterpieces from around the globe. From 1938’s Singing Lovebirds – directed by the “Busby Berkley of Japan” and featuring one of the actors from Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai in a singing role – to the sparkling and joyful British musical comedy First a Girl (1935) by way of India and 1972’s lush, extravagant Pakeezah - one of the most extraordinary musical melodramas ever made and a cult classic with an incredible Bollywood soundtrack.

Our Musicals! Hidden Gems season promises to introduce you to your new favourite movie musical, lift your spirits and put a kick in your step in the run up to the festive period!

This season is part of BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery, BFI Film Audience Network and ICO.
