This is not a film about country music. It is a film about America in 1975. The story of a few days in the lives of 24 loosely connected characters, it’s an epic political satire, the blackest and funniest of black comedies, a story of broken people, some tragic, some monstrous, “a tender poem”, as Roger Ebert described it, “to the wounded and the sad.” It does also have a terrific soundtrack.
