Night Moves 15
Reichardt returns to the fringes of society for her fifth feature film. Radical environmentalists Josh (Jesse Eisenberg) and Dena (Dakota Fanning) join forces with an ex-marine, Harmon (Peter Sarsgaard) to bomb a hydroelectric dam along Oregon’s Santiam River, a facility they believe is irreversibly harming local wildlife. Reichardt juxtaposes claustrophobic tensions in the group with the unravelling nightmare of the situation, as the film moves between the careful planning and execution of the attack while exploring the increasingly difficult relationships between the three central characters as they put their radical plan into action. Shot against the familiar backdrop of rural Oregon, this is the director’s unique take on the thriller genre.
