Reeling from the loss of her husband, Fern (Francis McDormand) takes to the roads, in Nomadland. Living out her days in a kitted-out van, travelling from town to town and picking up short-term seasonal work where she can get it. Facing a cold and lonely winter, Fern heads west and finds sanctuary with a community of desert nomads.
Though fictionalised, Zhao’s film is populated with real-life people, playing versions of their own stories, lending a culturally rich and deeply authentic look at America’s forgotten, modern-day nomads.
Nomadland is a poetic drama that slowly seeps into your bones, offering a nourishing look at the bonds that hold us together when we feel like falling apart.
