One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest 15
Indisputably renowned as one of the greatest films of the last 50 years, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is compelling viewing with a superb cast – Jack Nicholson & Louise Fletcher won Best Actor & Actress for their conflicting roles as the effervescent McMurphy and contemptable Nurse Ratched, the ensemble cast was also flawlessly built, including Danny Devito in his breakout role, Christopher Lloyd, Will Sampson and Brad Dourif.
Premiering in 1975, shortly after the Vietnam conflict, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was fearlessly timely in themes of men – and ex-soldiers - struggling to adjust to American society. Similarly, it’s sharp critique on societies historical lack of understanding and support for mental health issues remains bitingly relevant.
Charismatic criminal McMurphy - desperate to evade harsh work details after getting into trouble in prison - feigns insanity so that he can be put under observation in a mental hospital. Hoping for an easy, shortened sentence McMurphy unexpectedly finds himself in battle with the oppressive Nurse Ratched that leads the institution. Rebellious by nature, McMurphy rallies the other patients in an uprising, encouraging them to make a stand for their freedoms.
