Opportunities for Young People in the Film Industry with Showroom Cinema

Are you dreaming of a career in the film industry but don’t know where to start? Well, Showroom Cinema is a great place to take the first step in your journey.

If you’d love the chance to curate your own film festival or learn more about the inner workings of cinema programming and marketing, consider applying for Showroom’s Young Programmers course. Running for its third year, this annual opportunity for ages 18-25, helps young people learn from industry experts, get exclusive access to new releases and host takeover screenings to exhibit films of their choice.

A great opportunity for engaged film fans looking to take their first step in the industry, the group will meet twice a month, in person at Showroom Cinema, between February and June.

Each year, the group hosts screenings and develops unique talks and wraparound events to promote their films. For the last cohort, this included a Wallace and Gromit quiz with influencer Vegan Luke to promote The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Working with Showroom Cinema’s team members, this opportunity has been a game changer for many young people who have since gone on to work full time in the film industry. Application deadline: 6 January 2025.

Perhaps you’re more interested in delving into old footage and learning about the world of film archiving? Working with the British Film Institute, Showroom Cinema is delivering a brand-new course: the BFI Film Academy Specialist Residential 2025 - Film Curation and Archiving.

The opportunity is available for 30 young people, aged 16 -19, and will provide opportunities to visit film archives and studios – the BFI National Film Archive, Yorkshire Film Archive and ITV Archive - to learn from industry experts, and work in teams to curate collections of shorts and archive films, which will tour to venues, film festivals and more.

Running from 17-23 February 2025, the course provides young people with skills and experience that are essential to becoming part of the future film industry. Application deadline: 17 January 2025.

Both opportunities are free to apply for and bursaries for travel and childcare are available to keep the programmes as accessible as possible.

As a lead partner with Film Hub North and a registered charity (1002020), Showroom Cinema is the perfect place for young people in Sheffield to start their career in film. So, what are you waiting for? Apply today!

Application details for both opportunities are available at Partnerships - Showroom Workstation - Sheffield
