Released in 1920, Der Golem is a classic of German expressionist cinema every bit as powerful as Metropolis (1927)and Nosferatu (1922). The film was director Paul Wegener’s third, and final, version of the ancient Jewish myth, and his magnum opus.

50 years ago, on the 16th of January 1969, the philosophy student and political activist Jan Palach set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in central Prague. He did so to protest the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia.
