Powell & Pressburger: Lillian Crawford Screen Talk
In 1948, Powell and Pressburger blurred the lines between ballet and cinema. This illustrated talk from Lillian Crawford will look at Michael Powell’s ambition to combine art forms to create a sublime new medium by focusing on the role of ballet in his films, from The Red Shoes to The Tales of Hoffmann, via lesser-known films including Oh… Rosalinda!!, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, and Honeymoon. It will also look ahead to how Matthew Bourne reinvented The Red Shoes and put it back on the stage.
Lillian Crawford is a film and culture critic for publications including Little White Lies, Sight & Sound, The Guardian, and BBC Culture.
All tickets £5. A special screening of The Red Shoes will follow the screen talk.
