Laura Poitras (CitizenFour) shares unprecedented access to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, in this intricate documentary shot over six years. Opening in the dramatic aftermath to Wikileaks groundbreaking 2010 uncovering of the Afghan War Diary, Iraq War Logs and ‘Collateral Murder’ footage released by Chelsea Manning, Risk provides a behind-the-scenes look at Wikileaks and weaves a detailed tapestry of the man behind the organisation.
An unflinching, vérité portrait of a complicated man, Risk captures the personal journey of Assange as he navigates his rise to fame, and ultimately infamy: facing accusations of sexual assault and rape, teetering on the edge of egotism and paranoia and juggling his own principals. Moving beyond investigative journalism, Risk addresses the struggles of Poitras herself, and the ways in which her film evolves alongside her relationship with Assange and the Wikileaks team.
